COM 1000 SMATV Solution : Headend Equipment and TV’s with Pro:Idiom™ Chips

OVERVIEW

• The U.S. has adapted the TV distribution system to a high definition digital format (1080 i/p)
• All hotel and lodging institutions are required to use an encrypted TV  signal generated by a piece of equipment known by DIRECTV as COM 1000
• All major content providers encrypt the TV signals before delivery to the TV set where they get decrypted by an electronic chip called Pro:Idiom™
• Hotels are required to have TVs with either a built-in Pro:Idiom™ chip or they may use an external adapter for standard flat screen TVs
• Every flat screen TV MUST have a built-in method of removing the encryption before it can display the picture

EQUIPMENT

• A typical COM 1000 comes equipped with properly configured modulated signals for 8 to 16 TV channels using HD receivers supplied by DirecTV
• Modulators are highly sophisticated and cannot be altered or tuned by an average TV technician
• These are “encrypted” High Definition signals

SD and HD Channel Mix

• To reduce costs hotel owners may choose to add SD channels to the HD signals
• A separate SD analog rack may be added to mix SD channels with the HD signals externally before distributing them to the guest rooms
• Guestroom TVs must be equipped with Pro:Idiom™ chipset to enable the signals to be decrypted

HD Content Distribution

• DIRECTV® and Thomson are proud to introduce an all new cost effective DIRECTV® Pro:Idiom™ encrypted HD content distribution system.
• The new COM1000 system has been designed for use in the Hospitality market and is capable of supporting a coax building infrastructure by use of QAM technology with Pro:Idiom™ digital rights management.
• The key components of the new system are the COM24-1 modular tuning card, the COM200 chassis with power supply, satellite RF distribution switch(es), Ethernet switch and QAM modulators.

• Configuration of the digital portion of a HeadEnd system can be quite complicated for an installation company who is not familiar with or has not been trained on this new digital technology.
• This equipment is software controlled requiring a new and different approach by the installer.
• MTV has designed and embedded control software in each of the Cabletronix QAM modulators that assist in streamlining the integration of the COM1000 system components.
• In addition, the control server allows for enhanced system management features.
