Wi-fi Internet

Wi-fi: a can't do without amenity
Now-a-days, almost all motels, franchise or independent, are offering free Wi-Fi high speed internet access as an amenity for guests. Many hotel/motels offer access in guest rooms as well as public areas like lobbies, meeting rooms, restaurants, lounges, etc. to all without any restriction but some only offer the access if you are a hotel guest. Some hotels provide free access in public areas to non-guests. Whatever may the hotel policy be, availability of internet access have become vital in retaining and getting new customers.

How wi-fi works
You can get hi-speed internet to your property via DSL, cable or satellite. When you place a wireless router and antenna to broadcast signals, guests can access the wireless internet from the convenience of their room or Hotel lobby.
Wireless signals are transmitted from elevated antennas that cover broad outdoor areas. These antennas can transmit signal from a few hundred feet to more than ½ mile.

Factors that affect signal strength and quality

  • Distance from the nearest antenna
  • Trees blocking clear line of sight between guest room and the antenna
  • wall or other devices blocking the clear line of sight between your laptop and the antenna
  • Another Wi-Fi network set up in a neighboring area
  • Aluminum or other metallic window shades/blinds will reflect signal away from guest's laptop
  • Materials used in manufacturing such as metal siding, electrical and plumbing lines, and even window tint with metallic/reflective coatings can reflect Wi-Fi signals
  • Most laptops have built-in wireless adapter card are designed for mobility and low power consumption. They work fine in relatively small, “hotspot”-type, interior environments.
  • Many built-in wireless cards are located on the underside of the laptop computer, which reduces signal reception capabilities. So moving your laptop a few inches in a way that the adapter card is slightly over
  • the edge of the desk, will increase signal substantially.
  • PC Cards slide into a slot in the side of your computer and can provide enhanced signal strength and stabilize connection speeds if you are having trouble using your built-in wireless card. Some cards have connectors that  allow you to attach an external antenna, enhancing signal even further.
  • USB Adapters are probably the single best option for using Wi-Fi. They combine good output power with the ability to place them where signal is strongest, without having to move your laptop around.

Security of the network
All traffic that enters your system over a wireless network (WLAN) interface must be thoroughly scrubbed. This is critical if your wireless device is also linked to your wired local area network (LAN). If malicious traffic is allowed to invade your wireless-enabled device unchecked, it should not be surprise if someone manages to breach many other network resources and data stores on your LAN that the wireless-enabled device in question may be interfaced with.

Use of Firewall
A properly configured firewall creates a barrier between your trusted network on the inside and the untrusted or hostile devices on the outside. They provide an added layer of security as the data traverses over wired LAN, or through the air over WLAN segments.
